The World Food Summit Case Competition is an international competition that brings together 29 students from 15 countries to be the food innovators of tomorrow. Small teams from across the world will develop forward-thinking solutions to a case study that spans the breadth and depth of food systems in a three-day program.
Students engage with the participants in the concurrent World Food Summit - Better Food for More People, a unique opportunity to connect with top academics, business leaders, chefs, producers, and politicians. Each team will make a short case presentation to a select panel of distinguished professors, industry professionals, and officials.
The Competition culminates at the Danish Parliament, Christiansborg, where the top four teams will present at the final plenary of the World Food Summit - Better Food for More People to all Summit participants, including Danish Minister for Environment and Food, Esben Lunde Larsen.
The Challenge: How can gastronomy reconnect consumers with the complex systems producing their food, acting as a tool for building a more sustainable and just world?
On the one hand, urbanization has paved the way for increased mobility of ideas, capital, food, and people. On the other hand, urban consumers are more and more disconnected from the hands that feed them. What’s more, food systems are becoming ever more intricate. Between the bookends of producers and consumers, there are politicians, scientists, activists, businesspeople, economists, scholars, investors, chefs, and farmers, to name a few. The complex fabric of a food system is formed as stakeholders and market flows are woven together in growing, processing, distributing, consuming and disposing of food.

Five distinguished World Food Summit – Better Food for More People participants will select the winning team on the final plenary on Friday 25 August 2017.

Esben Lunde Larsen was appointed Minister for Environment and Food 29 February 2016 by Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Prior to that Esben Lunde Larsen served as Minister for Higher Education and Science.

Mella is an Irish citizen, living and working in Brussels where she is Director General of FoodDrinkEurope, Europe's food and drink industry organization. A scientist by training, Mella has worked for close to 30 years in the food and agricultural industries. She holds a Master degree in Phycology, and executive education awards from various business schools including Insead and Harvard. She is on numerous boards, and is a member of the jury of EUCYS, the European Union Competition for Young Scientists

Carolyn Steel is a leading thinker on food and cities. Her 2008 book Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives is an international best seller, and her concept of ‘sitopia’ (food-place) is widely recognized in the emergent field of food urbanism. Carolyn has taught at Cambridge University, London Metropolitan University, London School of Economics and Wageningen University. She is a director of Kilburn Nightingale Architects, London
CEO, NESTLÉ Nordics
Michiel Kernkamp is the CEO of NESTLÉ Nordics (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland) based in Copenhagen. Michiel has lived in the Netherlands, France, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, Japan and is living in Copenhagen since January 2016. During his life abroad and along his professional career, Michiel became increasingly interested in the opportunities and challenges of the food value chain and the opportunities to enhance quality of life and contribute to a healthier future. His particular creating shared value focus is on driving better food utilization (avoiding food waste) and the cross stakeholder initiatives that can be deployed to increase transparency of the food value chain thus increasing its utilization efficiencies.
